A bit more about Portugal - Palm tree

Canary Island Date palmCanary Island Date palmWhen people think about Portugal they imagine a landscape with palm trees. The most popular palm tree is the the Canary Island date palm. This is a sturdy, showy plant which really constitute an important part of Portugal's landscape.

It is a slowly growing tree up to 20 meters, exclusively propagated by seed. It has no harvestable crop. The palm is easily recognized through its crown of leaves and trunk characteristics. It is not uncommon to see Canary Island date palms pruned and trimmed to enhance the appearance.

Affected palm treeAffected palm treeIn the first eight months of 2008, over 10,000 palm trees have been destroyed because of the red palm weevil reached the Mediterranean region, including Portugal. When you see a palm tree with yellowing and wilting leaf that is an affected plant it may lead to the death. Once in the palm, remedial control is not possible. Most of the cities are planning to replace the palm trees.
